"Help! I can't afford Dental Care! "  This is the cry of millions of people in the United States.   First, let me disclose that, in this area, I may be just a little biased.  You see, I have practiced general dentistry for years, starting before dental plans even existed.  I have seen dental insurance and dental plans take so many twists and turns over the years that it has been mind boggling.  Here, I will present some ideas about alternatives, their pros and cons.   Be prepared for honesty on my part.  Maybe some of my ideas will help you see a larger picture than the usual insurance advertisements.

Thinking of buying a dental plan you've seen advertised?  Before you do,  it's a good idea to learn a little about what is involved.  Dental "insurance" is really only available to members of a group, traditionally employees of a certain participating company or members of a professional society or group of retirees.  When a person is not eligible for a group dental "insurance" plan,  another option may be a dental "Discount" plan.   I'll try to explain the difference on this site.
